Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive prices when quoting
  • Using the wrong VAT rate for a product category (many countries have reduced rates for food, medicine, etc.)
  • Not accounting for VAT on imported services (reverse charge mechanism)

Best Practices

  • Always state whether prices are inclusive or exclusive of VAT/GST
  • Check for reduced rates on your specific product/service category
  • Register for VAT/GST in each country once you exceed the local threshold

Why use this tool?

Getting VAT/GST wrong on invoices creates compliance risk and damages client relationships. Use this tool to verify tax amounts before issuing invoices or filing returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

VAT (Value Added Tax) and GST (Goods and Services Tax) are both multi-stage taxes collected at each point in the supply chain and ultimately borne by the end consumer - they're functionally the same concept. Sales Tax (used in the US) is collected only at the final point of sale. Businesses paying VAT/GST can reclaim input tax; US sales tax has no such mechanism.
